How to Create a Book Launch Plan

As indie authors, we bask in the idea that writing our book will be the hardest part.

WRONG!

Now, people have to read it.

How do you reach them?

Launching a book isn't just about hitting publish and crossing your fingers. It's about creating a buzz, reaching new readers, and creating your spot in the publishing world.

Even though I firmly believe that publishing a book is more of a marathon than a sprint, crafting a fantastic book launch can help start that marathon on the right foot.

Worry not, dear indie author! We're here to support you with a step-by-step guide to crafting a killer book launch plan that will make your book soar.

Crafting Your Ultimate
Book Launch Plan

  1. SET YOUR GOALS

First, what do you want to achieve with your book launch? Are you aiming for bestseller status, building your author platform, or simply sharing your story? Define your objectives to steer your plan in the right direction. Each indie author writes and publishes for different reasons, and it's essential to understand and validate your own reasons.

  2. KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE

I won’t stop stressing the importance of knowing your reader. Who are the people itching to get their hands on your book? Understand your target readers’ preferences, demographics, and where they hang out online. This knowledge will guide your marketing efforts.

  3. BUILD BUZZ PRE-LAUNCH

Start drumming up excitement long before your book hits the shelves. Tease snippets of your work on social media, find enticing hooks, offer exclusive sneak peeks to your email subscribers, and consider running a pre-order campaign to incentivize early purchases.

  4. CREATE INTERESTING CONTENT

Content is king (or queen!), and your book launch is no exception. Write captivating blog posts, create eye-catching graphics, and film engaging videos to showcase your book and connect with your audience on a personal level. But most of all, as Carissa Broadbent said in an IG live with Tina from @bookedtildawn: create hooks that grab your readers’ attention!

  5. SPEAK WITH INFLUENCERS

Team up with your niche's authors, book bloggers, and influencers to amplify your reach. Consider hosting joint giveaways, participating in blog tours, or even collaborating on special events (they can be virtual, too) to tap into each other's audiences.

  6. PLAN YOUR LAUNCH EVENT

Hosting an event around your launch can generate excitement and create a memorable experience for your readers, whether it's a virtual launch party, a book signing at your local bookstore, or a live-streamed Q&A session.

  7. OPTIMIZE YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE

Ensure your website, social media profiles, and Amazon author page are primed to convert curious browsers into eager buyers. You can optimize your keywords, update your author bio, and ensure your book cover stands out!

  8. REVIEWS AND TESTIMONIALS

Social proof is a powerful tool in book marketing. Reach out to book reviewers, book clubs, and beta readers to gather early reviews and testimonials that you can leverage to build credibility and trust with potential readers. Send out ARCs, and do not be afraid to gift your book in exchange for reviews. It will genuinely help boost your social presence.

  9. KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING

As I said, this isn’t a sprint but a marathon. Your book launch isn't a one-and-done affair. Keep the momentum going post-launch by continuing to engage with your audience, nurturing relationships with your readers, and exploring opportunities for ongoing promotion and exposure.
